The point — despite a certain rhetorical tendency in the Discourses to a negation of “the world” — is not ascetic renunciation, but the adoption of a certain attitude to worldly goods, one summed up in Johannes Climacus’s formula, “relating . . . absolutely to [the] absolute telos and relatively to the relative” (1846/1992, 407).
